Preparing For Your First Visit to a Family History Center

By Karen Clifford, AG

Have you ever wondered what it was like inside a Family History Center?  This presentation provides a complete plan for preparing to visit a FHC, how to locate one in your area, what to expect when you get there, how valuable they can be to your research, and it introduces forms and charts you can download off line to prepare for that first visit. By spending about 15 minutes watching this presentation, printing the handouts, and filling them out before you come, you will find the resources twice as effective.  And if you don'thave one nearby, listen to the next presentations for a virtual tour of a typical center.  There are great folks just waiting for you to stop by so they can share their own enthusiasm.

Arriving At The Family History Center

By Karen Clifford, AG

Your First Visit to a Family History Center might begin looking up at a sign that reads Family History Center The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  This is the organization that freely shares their resources and volunteers to help everyone find their families. Bring your materials as taught in the first presentation and start off with the Social Security Death Index to find recent deceased family members with their dates and proper locations of birth and death.  Learn about FamilySearch.org and be introduced to The Guide to the Family History Center (a wonderful step-by-step check off list of resources unique to each center). See the value of the International Genealogical Index, the 1880/1881 national census index for the U.S., Canada, and Great Britain to track down your English speaking ancestors, as well as the major databases of the Family History Library in Salt Lake City.  While alot will be covered in a brief 20 minutes, you can stop the presentation, study the slides, and move on when you feel comfortable.  Friendly and knowledgeable people are there to point out resources to help you at your local center.  If you can't take time to visit in person now, take this virtual tour so you will know what to expect when the opportunity becomes available.

Applying the Guide to a Family History Center

By Karen Clifford, AG

Applying the Guide to a Family History Center covers unique items found in the over 1500 centers in the United States such as local filing systems, book, map, and microfilm collections, surname collections of local patrons, magazines and periodical indices and collections, and various Internet and CD offerings. Local centers offer a variety of different services and materials.

Using a Family History Center to Obtain Original Sources

By Karen Clifford, AG

Using a Family History Center to Obtain Original Sources focuses on materials, collections, equipment, and services available at a Family History Center to perform original research on your family. A step-by-step plan is explained for using unique research tools to take a beginner from missing pieces in their history to sources for finding those pieces. From a Research Planner to the various levels of the Family History Library Catalog, to methods for recalling what was found, proving the proper location, and numerous finding aids, there are slick techniques to using one of the great sources for Family History research.

Finding Your Family on the 1930 Federal Census in a Family History Center

By Karen Clifford, AG

Finding Your Family on the 1930 Federal Census in a Family History Center is a simple tutorial packed with experienced techniques for using this latest federal census collection.  This census might contain people that you personally remember.  By starting with this firm foundation of relationships, your history can build on the knowledge found. Acquaint yourself with Ancestry.com free at a Family History Center, but learn to use it properly. Learn how to use city directories between those census records in big cities to see where your ancestors might have moved each year.  Boost your results by using search engines properly, and find out how to analyze and set new goals based on your research results. It's convenient, its nearly instantaneous from index to image, and it’s a thrill when you first see someone you recognize! Use it here where it is free and you can get help from volunteers.
